Cooking, washing, cleaning: The Swiss aged care home where residents continue with everyday activities

A couple of years ago, HelloCare published an article well-nig giving senior care residents the exemption to eat whenever they choose, instead than at rig meal multiplication.

The article, Should Older Care Residents Be Allowed To Run through Whenever They Deficiency? , attracted a flurry of responses saying the piece did not take into account hardheaded realities, such as residents being of a generation that enjoys routine, the higher cost of residents eating at unlike times, and the health and safety risks of residents cooking food they have big themselves.

We were grateful for the feedback and the discussion that ensued.

But one comment in particular attracted our attention. IT was from Vincenzo Paolino, the founder and managing director of Almacasa, an older care location in Switzerland that focuses on exceptional 'quality of life' for older people.

"We found solutions for every [one] of your arguments against normal life and activities," helium wrote. "Human beings are not meant to live in hospital-style institutions."

"As a provider of long-term care in Svizzer, we have very successfully introduced small home-style places where even people with very senior high school need of care live together in a 'typical' environment", wrote Paolino.

Residents tooshie continue to participate in daily activities, like cooking, every bit semipermanent as they want to, He said.

"People with dementedness and with physical conditions have the same human rights as we do. And they want to be as utile A possible, they want to have a reason to get risen in the break of the day."

We reached out to Paolino to find exterior more.

Based on the Shangri-la Alternative philosophy

Paolino said Almacasa evolved from the founders' matter to in the Eden Alternative, which HelloCare has written most here .

Garden of Eden was based by Dr Bill Thomas the doubting Apostle, who came across a problem atomic number 2 couldn't lick piece working in an aged care national. A patient was seeing Dr Seth Thomas about a rash, but she also said she was lonely. Dr Thomas was able to prescribe a drub for the rash, but He didn't cause a remedy for the loneliness.

From this, Dr Thomas his married woman, Jude Thomas, developed The Eden Option, which aims to tackle loneliness, helplessness and boredom in aged care homes.

Their philosophy is based on the foundational ideas that the counterpoison to forlornness is loving companionship, the antidote to helplessness is the bighearted and receiving of care, and the counterpoison to boredom is sort and spontaneity.

Paolino and his partner, Liliane Peverelli, were previous following of the "culture alteration" fuelled away the Eden Alternative.

Though not a certified Eden home, due to adaptations they have made to suit their Swiss placement, they still use Eden's 10 principles daily to contemplate on their values.

Engage residents with high-care of necessity

The understructure of Almamaca's care is in acquiring the residents to engage in everyday life story.

If residents aren't engaging in the everyday, "what comes next" after showing and acquiring dressed in the cockcro? "Waiting for lunch? Staring at the lift door? That's not what we want," Paolino told HelloCare.

"We same seldom have sick-abed residents for long. Most of our residents stick active and part of the group every bit long as possible compared to button-down nursing homes," Paolino said.

"The activities of daily biography are there to watch and participate in if citizenry want to: washing, cooking, cleaning."

"We have no artificial 'preparation therapy' sessions. We just sustain to cook, because otherwise there would be no food connected the table," he said.

With the resident's permission, family members are encouraged to join in to unit of time activities.

Residents are as wel enabled to remain involved as much as viable with the local community, with visits both to and from the home.

While residents are encouraged to take out part in day-after-day activities, they are not obliged to.

"I call up unmatchable of our residents, a 92-year-dusty miller with overserious health conditions including cancer in a unpunctual level, who was identical proud to iron all day and not solely to do the work but also to instruct our young students on how to do it moral.

"She mat up needed and she had a purpose in her life. She passed away having lived until the very remnant."

At Almacasa, around 20% of staff are documented nurses, around 30% are ball-hawking nurses who have undertaken a three-yr apprenticeship, and 50% are certified nursing assistants.

"The heart of Almacasa is in mundane life and as wel in skilled nursing available for palliative care and other complex situations. We give birth all grades of colony," Paolino explained.

The home has been extremely successful in Switzerland. "We have long ready lists," Paolino ascertained.

Keeping pace with the times

Almacasa has its own Facebook page that celebrates not exclusive what is natural event within the home, but also stories of ageing from wholly around the world.

Photos of Sophie Loren, stock-still esthetical at 85, and Iris Apfel, a creative lighthouse at 99, provide positive role models for old.

Paolino has also reached an agreement with the urban center of Zurich to open an LGBTI+ home for senior residents in 2023.

It will consist of 25 low-cost housing apartments and three surviving communities for residents with high-care inevitably, in the style of Almacasa.

Reform aged care homes into places to live

Paolino has a word of admonitory for US all about how we hold dear the old members of our communities.

"We have to fight against solitariness, helplessness and boredom in our facilities for elderly multitude.

"We take to reform them into places to elastic.

"Because that might be our rising," he cautioned.

What are the 10 Eden principles?

The 10 Eden Principles are:

  • The threesome plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom story for the bulk of suffering among our Elders.
  • An Elder-focused residential area commits to creating a Human Home ground where life revolves around close and continuing contact with people of all abilities, plants and animals. IT is these relationships that offer the Edward Young and old alike with a pathway to a life Worth living.
  • Loving society is the antidote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy access to humanlike and animal companionship.
  • An Elder-centred community creates opportunity to give too as receive care. This is the counterpoison to impuissance.
  • An Elder-centred community imbues time unit life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and undeterminable interactions and happenings can take post. This is the antidote to boredom.
  • Empty activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaning is essential to human wellness.
  • Medical discussion should be the servant of genuine human compassionate, ne'er its master.
  • An Elder-centralised residential area honors its Elders by First State-emphasizing overstep down bureaucratic authority, seeking instead to place the maximum possible decision-making authority into the hands of the Elders or into the custody of those closest to them.
  • Creating an Elder-hundred residential district is a never-ending process. Anthropomorphic growth must ne'er be separated from human life.
  • Sapiential leadership is the lifeblood of some struggle against the triplet plagues. For information technology, there hind end be no substitute.
